| Dr. Lynn C.
Dickerson Receives Honor for Distinguished Service |
Dr.
Lynn Dickerson, winner of the Virginia Forestry
Association's Distinguished Service Award for 2006, has been
a certified Tree Farmer since 1965, a member of the Virginia
Forestry Association since 1974, a life member since 1986,
and a member of the Magazine Editorial Committee from 1986
through 2005. He has served three terms on the VFA Board of
Directors and three terms on the VA Executive Committee.
What prompted Lynn to plant four acres of trees on family
acreage in Botetourt County in 1951 while he was still in
college, we may never know. But it was the beginning of a
wonderful career as a Tree Farmer. Combining his education,
which culminated in a Ph.D. from Emory University, and his
professional career teaching American literature and
American studies for 20 years at the University of Richmond,
he has brought a great insight into the history, role and
prospects for forestry in Virginia and the United States.
One of his former students said of him, "Dr. Dickerson is a
forester masquerading as an English Professor." Those of us
in the forestry community who have worked with Lynn have
been the beneficiaries. In many ways he has contributed his
talents to the Association. For twenty years, Lynn was a key
advisor to the publication of Virginia Forests magazine with
ideas for articles, authorship of articles, and very
importantly, being available to the staff to assist in
coordinating magazine issues, editing, and proofreading. All
of this has been done with quiet enthusiasm and interest.
The Virginia Forestry Association has benefited from Dr.
Dickerson's dedication and service, and we are proud to name
him as the recipient of this year's Distinguished Service
Award.

Gerald B. Foltz is VFA
Outstanding Member of the Year |

Marvin Tinsle, left, presents the VFA
Outstanding Member of the Year award to Gerald Foltz. |
There are few individuals who have
contributed more to the profession of forestry, the
community, and the success of the Virginia Forestry
Association than the 2006 Outstanding Member award winner,
Gerald "Jerry" Foltz. A 1969 graduate of Virginia Tech with
a bachelor's degree in foresry, Foltz began working for
Westvaco Corporation in June 1969. In 1974 he became
District Supervisor for wood procurement operations in
central Virginia. Foltz has been a member of VFA for 30
years, serving three terms on the Board of Directors, five
years on the Executive Committee and is a past president.
When the VFA office was moved to its current location, he
spent countless hours designing the makeover and raising
money for our new office. He has served on several VFA
committees including membership, nominating, government
relations and Capitol Holiday Tree. Along with co-worker Dow
Mongold, Jerry initiated the Lynchburg Chapter of the Log a
Load for Kids committee, and continues to be a driving force
in their fundraising efforts. He has also been a member and
leader in the Society of American Foresters, the
Reforestation of Timberlands Board, and the Forest Resources
Association. In addition, he has served the Holiday Lake 4-H
Center, Appomattox Lions Club and the Appomattox
Presbyterian Church. |
